Why a UK calculator works in pounds

Working out Zakat in the UK means answering questions that rarely appear on generic calculators: what counts in a cash ISA, whether a locked pension is reachable, and where the nisab threshold sits today when prices move. This tool keeps everything in pounds sterling and uses current UK thresholds — a silver-standard nisab of roughly £432 and a gold-standard nisab of roughly £4,380, based on recent market prices.

You can switch between the four schools — Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali — and, if you prefer a figure your own mosque published, type a custom nisab directly. The calculator then adds your zakatable wealth, subtracts the immediate debts and bills you enter, and works out 2.5% on the net balance above the threshold. Every step is shown in pounds so you can check it line by line.

Keeping the calculation in your browser also keeps it private. No figures are uploaded, and nothing is tracked — which is exactly where a personal wealth calculation belongs.

When does the lunar year start? Most people mark the date their wealth first reached the nisab threshold and calculate on that anniversary each year, rather than waiting for Ramadan. There is no fixed month required; choosing a date you will remember simply makes the habit stick. Once the figure is confirmed, Zakat is meant to reach those entitled, and many UK Muslims pay it through a trusted local charity or their mosque.

How to work through it

A few minutes, once per lunar year, in pounds.

Step 1

Choose your school

Tap Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki or Hanbali. The default nisab shown in your result follows that school's usual practice.

Step 2

Enter your assets in £

Add cash and savings, gold, silver, shares, crypto, business stock and money owed to you — in pounds.

Step 3

Subtract immediate debts

Enter bills and loans due now. The calculator deducts them before applying the 2.5%.

Step 4

Compare with nisab and calculate

Check the pre-filled threshold (or enter your own), then tap Calculate. Your Zakat due and the full breakdown appear below.

UK points people ask about

Cash ISAs are treated like savings. Most scholars treat money held in a cash ISA as ordinary savings, so it is zakatable; stocks and shares ISAs follow the rules for shares. A pension you cannot touch yet is generally not zakatable until you can withdraw it — and at that point the position changes.

Zakat is not the same as Fitrana. The annual 2.5% on wealth is Zakat; Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a separate, smaller amount due per person before Eid prayer, around the cost of a meal. They are paid on different occasions and should not be confused.

This is a guide, not a fatwa. UK Zakat rulings differ between schools and scholars, especially on ISAs, pensions, crypto and shares. Confirm your personal calculation with a trusted scholar or a UK Zakat authority. For a printable annual record to keep or share, the Pro report is a one-time purchase in the shop.

Give it once, on a date you will remember. Some people calculate at the same point each year; others wait until they have a clear picture of their savings in the spring or the new tax year. Either approach is fine as long as a full lunar year has passed and the threshold is checked against that day's metal prices.

How UK Zakat is calculated

01

Add your zakatable wealth

Cash, savings, gold and silver, shares, crypto, business stock and money owed to you. Your primary home, car and personal use items are not zakatable.

02

Subtract immediate debts

Bills, loans and debts due now are deducted. Money you owe that will be paid later this year is treated differently by scholars — this calculator deducts immediate liabilities.

03

Compare with nisab, pay 2.5%

If your net wealth equals or exceeds the nisab, 2.5% of it is due — provided it was held for one lunar year. The calculator shows every step.

UK Zakat questions, answered

01

Do I pay Zakat on my ISA?

Cash ISAs are treated like savings by most scholars — zakatable. Stocks and shares ISAs follow the rules for shares. Pensions are generally not zakatable until withdrawn — confirm with your scholar.

02

Which nisab should I use?

The silver standard (about £432) is the safer threshold used by many UK scholars — it makes Zakat obligatory for more people. The gold standard is about £4,380. Your calculator defaults to your school's practice.

03

Is Zakat paid on crypto?

Most contemporary scholars say yes — 2.5% of market value once above nisab. Some suggest paying Zakat on gains only; check your local fatwa.

04

What is the difference between Zakat and Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat is the annual 2.5% on wealth. Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a separate, small amount due before Eid prayers — roughly the cost of a meal per person, currently around £5–£8 in the UK.

Beyond the calculator: keeping the calculation honest

The figure this calculator produces is only as good as the numbers you enter, so it pays to review the inputs once a year. Zakat is due on wealth held for a full lunar year above the nisab threshold, and the common mistake is entering savings balances without accounting for the debts due in the same year, or forgetting the cash value of gold and silver kept at home. The UK calculator includes both the money-based nisab and the gold and silver nisab so you can check against the threshold your local scholar or mosque recommends.

For most people in the UK, the practical result is that zakat becomes a scheduled, stress-free act rather than a scramble at the end of Ramadan. Keep the inputs in the same place you keep your tax records, review them when your savings meaningfully change, and treat the printed report as the record for your own peace of mind. When in doubt about a specific asset or a debt arrangement, a local scholar is the right final word.
